Remote Position Is a Good Fit for Overseas Job Seeker

This week, our FlexJobs success story is about Christine D., whose story may resonate with job seekers looking for truly virtual work. Christine, who lives in Frankfurt, Germany, was seeking a remote job that she could do no matter where she lived.

After becoming a FlexJobs member, Christine was hired as as director of national accounts, a full-time independent contractor position, with Global Cynergies. Based in Scottsdale, Arizona, Global Cynergies works to find the best meeting spaces for clients’ conferences, special events, and business-related gatherings.

Moving Abroad as Motivation to Seek Remote Work

Responding to a series of questions FlexJobs asks remote workers, Christine said changing life circumstances for her family prompted her search for virtual work. “My husband’s job took us abroad,” Christine told us.

Once in Germany, Christine said her search for work in-country was hindered because of language. “Not speaking the local language made it difficult for me to find a job locally, so I began to look for virtual positions,” Christine said.

Making the Most of a FlexJobs Membership

Once she was overseas and had started her search for virtual work, Christine launched a broad online search. “I was Googling virtual positions and stumbled across FlexJobs,” she wrote.

Christine began to do her homework, including checking out FlexJobs’ reputation and the experiences and job search success stories of other job seekers who used FlexJobs to find work-from-home, part-time, freelance, and flexible schedule positions. “I was so impressed with the recommendations from previous users, who had been successful in their job search, so I decided to give it a try,” Christine told us.

Compared to other sites she encountered in her online search, Christine said several benefits offered by FlexJobs stood out. “I like that FlexJobs filters the positions before posting them, to ensure that they are not a scams,” she wrote, referring to the fully vetted FlexJobs database of thousands of flexible positions.

For Christine, knowing that all of the openings listed by FlexJobs were legitimate, professional positions made her search for virtual work a lot easier, she said. “It is difficult with virtual positions because there are some scams out there, but FlexJobs does the difficult part for you.”

Insight and Inspiration for Other Job Seekers

Speaking as an international job seeker, Christine noted the lack of global jobs for people in her situation, looking for jobs that can be done from anywhere in the world. “There are not a ton of 100 percent home-based positions available internationally for English-only speakers, so my most effective tactic was patience,” she wrote.

Christine took full advantage of her membership by applying for many of the positions on FlexJobs that met her criteria—and being consistent and steadfast over time. “I applied to almost every position position that fit what I was looking for,” Christine said, adding, “I had to be patient because there were not many positions posted that fit my criteria.”

Her patience paid off, Christine told us. “I am very pleased with the result.”
