With a Remote Job, Baby Boomer Finds Time to Start a Health and Wellness Blog

Carving out time to pursue your personal passions can seem all but impossible if you’re working in a traditional job. Spare time can be in especially short supply if you have a long commute. But a remote job can make all the difference, as in the case of this week’s FlexJobs success story. With a remote job, she’s ditched a long commute and found the time to start a health and wellness blog.

Lisa M., who identifies as a baby boomer, was in a high-stress management-level job in healthcare when she was laid off. That seemingly bad turn of luck led to something good: a FlexJobs membership and a full-time, remote job as a telephonic case manager.

Lisa was hired by Broadspire, a subsidiary of Crawford & Company that provides third-party administration and medical management services to corporate, insurance, and brokerage clients. How did Lisa make the leap to a flexible, low-stress job?

Dealing with a Job Layoff

Lisa lives in the small, semi-rural town of Moncks Corner, South Carolina, about 45 minutes outside of Charleston. Her previous job was the source of a lot of angst, and the commute was grueling. “I came from a leadership position that was very stressful, and had to deal with a lot of office politics,” Lisa said.

Then came a mass layoff because the company was “restructuring due to a very unstable market in healthcare,” Lisa wrote, responding to questions FlexJobs asks members who’ve found job search success using our services.

Bouncing Back with a Remote Job

Lisa offered a whole litany of ways in which a remote job has been a big change for the better in her life. “I am saving two hours a day in travel time that I use to workout at the gym and work on my new endeavor,” her health and wellness blog, she wrote.

“I am happier,” she continued, “so the quality of time with my family is much improved. I have more time to spend doing the things I love and being with the people I care about.” Working flexibly has changed her perspective on her career prospects and allowed her to do away with the commuting costs. “I have no stress now and actually make almost as much as I did in my previous career, without having to spend all that money on gas, clothing, and office functions.”

Tips and Inspiration for Other Job Seekers

For Lisa, her job search focus centered on resumes and research: “Having a good resume is key,” she wrote. “When I say ‘good’ I do not necessarily mean long. Gear your resume to the job you are wanting to be hired for. One size does not fit all. And absolutely research the company before applying. Just because you have never heard of them doesn’t mean they are not a stellar company to work for.”

Lisa’s been spreading the good news about her success finding flexible work using FlexJobs. “If you are looking for a job that will give you more flexibility and put you in control of the way you spend your workday, then you absolutely need to subscribe to FlexJobs,” she wrote. “I tell all my old colleagues who have just been laid off, or are just tired of the long, slow commute to work every day, to check out FlexJobs.”
