Woman Finds Better Balance Between Work and Family with Remote Executive-Level Job

The focus of this week’s FlexJobs success story credits work flexibility with helping her achieve a healthy work-life blend. An executive-level professional, she’s found a better balance between work and family with a great remote position.

Julie L. had a previous positive experience working from home, and was looking to maintain that flexibility when she began her search for a remote executive-level job. Through her FlexJobs membership, Julie found a job as executive director at Girls on the Run International. She works full-time for the nonprofit agency, which uses running as the core of a fun curriculum that inspires girls to be confident and healthy.

More Flexibility with a Remote Job

A resident of Irvine, California, Julie said she was seeking work-from-home flexibility that would allow room for things that matter to her life. “I wanted to have a flexible position that allowed me to balance my work and family,” she said. “Picking my daughter up from school or attending my son’s after-school sports games is important to me.”

Thanks to Julie’s previous experience as a virtual worker, she was familiar with many of the benefits of flexible work. “I find that I work better when I am in a flexible arrangement. I also find that I work more and I’m always engaged when I work remotely.”

Personal and Financial Fulfillment Working from Home

Julie, who self-identified as a member of generation X, told us her flexible executive-level job “allows me to fulfill myself professionally and contribute to my family’s income.” She wrote her comments in response to questions from FlexJobs about her job search success.

Having worked from home before, Julie said she “had the knowledge and home infrastructure to support this arrangement.” Remote workers can increase their chances for success by setting up a home office or workspace that fits their circumstances, and managing expectations with employers, family members, and loved ones.

Inspiring Insights for Other Job Seekers

Julie had some great advice for other job seekers looking for flexible work. “Be patient with your search,” she wrote. What’s more, she advised, “Being aligned with the job requirements is essential, so I would make sure to highlight the areas in my cover letters that addressed specific alignments.”

Another tip from Julie was to try to find potential employers that are a good fit. “I interviewed with many organizations and found that many of them did not meet my expectations as a possible employer,” Julie said. “I always research an organization before I apply and definitely before an interview.”

Targeting your job search goals is key, Julie said. “We all have different reasons for seeking flexible work. I have worked in all types of formats and prefer autonomy and flexibility, so I can determine the optimum environment for me to succeed.”
