In a new ranking of U.S. cities that are strongholds of technology and startups, some of the usual suspects are there. That is, cities known for being home to innovative tech companies. But the list contains not just big coastal metropolitan regions, but cities for flexible tech jobs in the American heartland as well.

For employers, a look at the list of best U.S. cities for tech jobs, published by Entrepreneur.com, offers insight into the geographic regions that are attracting top tech talent, and which regions of the country are hotbeds for groundbreaking technology. The Entrepreneur.com list is based on myriad factors, including median incomes for tech employees, cost of living, and what percentage of the local population works in technology jobs like computer and IT, software development, and Internet and ecommerce.

Several of the cities on the Entrepreneur.com list offer great flexible jobs and are prominent on the geographic database of FlexJobs. Those cities offer flexible tech jobs that include options like working from home, alternative schedules, and freelancing.

Part of the famed eight-county Research Triangle, Durham boasts an average income of more than $91,000 for tech workers, who comprise nearly six percent of the workforce.

3. Huntsville, Alabama 

Home to the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center, Huntsville is a technology magnet where employees in the industry make more than $92,000 a year and comprise close to six percent of the region’s workers.

4. Omaha, Nebraska 

In the state’s largest city, Omaha, tech employers pay an average of nearly $76,000 a year. About 3.77 percent of the workforce is employed by the tech industry.

5. Columbus, Ohio 

The state’s biggest city and the state capital, Columbus, pays its tech employees nearly $76,000 a year on average. Those employees make up 3.77 percent of the workforce.

6. Cedar Rapids, Iowa 

Long an agricultural powerhouse, Cedar Rapids has emerged as a tech contender, where industry employees comprise more than four percent of the workforce and earn more than $80,000 a year on average.

7. Raleigh, North Carolina

As another city in the state’s vaunted Research Triangle, Raleigh is one of the country’s fastest-growing cities, where the average annual income for tech employees exceeds $85,000. More than five percent of the workforce are in the tech sector.

8. Des Moines, Iowa

The second Iowa city in the Top 10 list, Des Moines tech employees, who make up close to 3.5 percent of the city’s workforce, earn more than $77,000 a year on average.

9. San Antonio, Texas

Another of the nation’s fastest-growing cities, San Antonio is a mecca for techies, who make more than $84,000 a year on average, and comprise about three precent of the city’s workforce.

10. Sierra Vista, Arizona 

As a main commercial hub for the region southeast of Tucson, Sierra Vista is a surprising powerhouse on the list. More than five percent of the workforce works in tech, and salaries for the tech sector average more than $78,000 a year.
