How Technology Can Build Inclusive Economies: SXSW Panel

Save

For employers, offering remote and flexible jobs is a great way to bring talented professionals onto your team, no matter where they are located. Tech is at the crux of this way of working. Without it, companies (and job seekers) are limited by geographic location. But, it’s argued that some people are becoming economically and technologically distressed, and disconnected from progress. How can everyone benefit? Luckily, there’s a panel at South by Southwest (SXSW) to discuss!

SXSW Panel on How Technology Improves Inclusivity

SXSW is a conference and festival held yearly to celebrate film, interactive media, and music. Calling itself an “essential destination for global professionals,” SXSW features exhibitions, sessions, showcases, and screenings to help people come together for learning and networking.

During this year’s event, there is a panel discussion at SXSW on the topic of “Technology: The Great Equalizer?” Hosted by Dell Technologies, a FlexJobs Top 100 company, this discussion seeks to explore why our world is becoming more divided politically, socially, economically, and technologically. Attendees will learn about the role technology and remote work can play, and some of the employment trends we’re watching in the current and future state remote and flexible job market.

How Technology and Flexible Jobs Work Together

FlexJobs has long known that merging technology with work can lead to increased employment for many different groups. People with disabilities, caregivers, military spouses, and those located in rural communities can have an opportunity to use flexible and remote work to hold a steady job.

These segments of the population have been chronically left out of the workforce. For example, SourceAmerica reports that 76.8% of the general population are working or seeking work, but only 32.6% of people with disabilities are doing so. The military spouse unemployment rate is six times that of civilian workers. And rural workers face an unemployment rate of 4.2% vs. 3.9% for urban areas, and wages have only grown at an average annual rate of 0.5% a year vs. 1.8% in other areas.

While these people may once have been unable to travel long distances for a job or work during traditional hours, they can now use remote work to gain access to more job opportunities. By offering these workers the ability to take on higher-paying, professional-level jobs that can be done from their home, employers gain access to an increased talent pool, too.

Technology aids in connecting job seekers with better job opportunities and employers with talented workers who may not otherwise be available.
