Siemens Unveils Mobile Work Policy for 140,000 Employees

Save

We’re several months into the world’s largest work-from-home experiment, and by and large, it’s been a success. If there’s any silver lining to the pandemic, it’s that businesses all over the globe have begun to understand and appreciate the benefits of remote work.

From increased employee productivity, performance, and satisfaction, to lower business expenses, access to a more diversified applicant pool, and better emergency preparedness, remote work truly has become the future of work.

Companies big and small are taking notice. To keep staff safe and give their employees the flexibility they need to balance work with ever-changing home responsibilities, many businesses have decided to make the switch to long-term remote work. Other large companies, like Google, Warner Music Group, and Amazon corporate, are committing to remote work to 2021 and potentially beyond.

One of the most recent corporations to adapt that strategy is Siemens, a Germany-based company focused on automation, electrification, and digitalization, and one of the world’s largest producers of resource-saving, energy-efficient technologies. Siemens is the first large company in Germany to permanently incorporate remote work.

What Is Siemens’ Mobile Work Policy?

Fortunately, Siemens was able to quickly scale services during the pandemic to allow 300,000 employees to work from home.

The success of working remotely, along with worldwide surveys confirming that employees wanted more flexibility when it came to where they worked, led Siemens to make the change. Siemens is also counting on its new mobile work policy to enable the company to recruit and retain top talent.

A project team with employees and representatives from several different departments worked together to create the New Normal Working Model. Under the permanent plan, and effective immediately, over 140,000 employees in more than 125 locations in 43 countries will be able to work from wherever they are most productive for an average of two to three days a week.

The basis for Siemens’ new model is rooted in their corporate culture and a transformed leadership style that emphasizes outcomes rather than time spent at the office. The company aims to use the model to develop new ways of working together on a digital, mobile basis.

Roland Busch, Deputy CEO and Labor Director of Siemens AG, explains, “We trust our employees and empower them to shape their work themselves so that they can achieve the best possible results. With the new way of working, we’re motivating our employees while improving the company’s performance capabilities and sharpening Siemens’ profile as a flexible and attractive employer.”
