Why Smart Employers Embrace Benefits of Telecommuting, and Others are Afraid

Telecommuting offers tremendous benefits for employers across many industries. But–while some employers embrace telecommuting, others approach it with trepidation. A note we received, located below, does a great job of addressing an employer’s fear.

Employers: Embrace Benefits of Telecommuting

“In my job search not only have I noticed that companies don’t bother to implement telecommuting when they easily could but they also think it’s outlandish when you suggest telecommuting to them. Many job listings I see end with something to the effect of, ‘Do not bother to contact us if you are a telecommuter. We only work with in-house employees.’ I think companies think that if you want to telecommute that it really means you are trying to get out from under their watchful eye and slack off . . . all while in your pajamas. I had a prior job that started out as a traditional office job and when it went to telecommuting my productivity went way up until I was actually being asked to slow down. Most companies don’t realize this and it is sad.”

Being seen in an office can create the illusion of working, while telecommuting sometimes has the opposite effect–if you’re out of sight, an employer who’s uncomfortable with telecommuting may imagine you napping in a deck chair on your patio instead of diligently working on essential company projects.
