BIO

Sam R. Hamburg, Ph.D. is a clinical psychologist licensed in Illinois and New Jersey. He received his bachelor of arts degree from Brandeis University in 1969, and his doctorate in clinical psychology from The American University, Washington, DC, in 1976. In that same year, he was awarded a research grant from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. Dr. Hamburg completed his clinical internship at the Veterans' Administration Medical Center in Palo Alto, California.

After a semester teaching psychology at Mills College in 1977, Dr. Hamburg did hospital and clinic work for six years while developing a private practice. Dr. Hamburg was in private practice in New Jersey from 1980 through 1995. During that period, he also served as Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.

In 1995, after his wife accepted a professorship at the University of Chicago, Dr. Hamburg closed his New Jersey practice and started a private practice in Chicago. In that same year, he was appointed Lecturer in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Chicago's Pritzker School of Medicine, and joined the adjunct faculty of the Family Institute at Northwestern University. In 1996, Dr. Hamburg began volunteering his clinical services at the Marjorie Kovler Center for the Treatment of Survivors of Torture. From 1997 to 2003 he served on the center's advisory committee. In 2000, Dr. Hamburg published a relationship self-help book, Will Our Love Last? (Scribner). In 2012, he published a short e-book of marriage advice, The Newlyweds Book.

Although a full-time clinician, Dr. Hamburg has always maintained an active engagement with scientific psychology. His professional articles on psychotherapy, marital therapy, alcoholism, and depression have appeared in Journal of Marital and Family Therapy, International Journal of the Addictions, Journal of Studies on Alcohol, American Psychologist, Review of General Psychology, and Psychotherapy: Theory/Research/Practice, Pragmatic Case Studies in Psychotherapy. Ever since 1988, Dr. Hamburg has regularly reviewed scientific and professional books for Child and Family Behavior Therapy. His book reviews have also appeared in Journal of Family Psychology, Contemporary Psychology, and Psychotherapy Research.
