The Appalachian Trail Conservancy is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, with regional offices along the East Coast. Certified as one of the "Best Independent Charities of America," the ATC's mission is to preserve the 2,190-mile-long footpath that is the Appalachian Trail, or A.T., the "longest hiking-only footpath in the world." The history of the ATC dates back to October 1921, when regional planner Benton MacKaye publicly introduced his proposal for an Appalachian trail. In 1925, the Appalachian Trail Conference was established, and by 1937, its footpath stretched from Maine to Georgia. The Appalachian Trail Conservancy adopted its new name in July 2005, but its mission has always been to protect and manage the Appalachian Trail to ensure that its cultural heritage and natural beauty can be enjoyed for centuries of future generations.
