FoodCorps was founded after President Obama signed the Kennedy Serve America Act into law in 2009. Headquartered in Portland, Oregon, FoodCorps has 182 FoodCorp service members, 17 FoodCorps fellows stationed at over 500 schools across 16 states and Washington, D.C. FoodCorps is dedicated to partnering with schools to create local, nutritious, food, and knowledge about the environment and the food chain. By encouraging the development of healthy relationships with the environment and food; FoodCorps is using School gardens to reconnect children with their food sources and healthy choices. Through school gardens, children learn where food comes from, how to care about the earth and where food comes from, and allows for access to healthy food to larger populations of children. As an employer, FoodCorps has offered positions which feature part-time and telecommuting employment flexibility.
