GAIA - Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives is a worldwide alliance of 800 non-governmental organizations, individuals, and grassroots groups that recognize inefficient productional operations and health-threatening disposal methods. Its vision is to create a toxic-free world without incineration and landfills with a goal to develop a materials-efficient economy where all products are recycled, reused, or repaired. At GAIA, the members are committed to increasing collaboration and community solidarity to achieve a common goal of protecting families and communities from pollution and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

In December 2000, the GAIA held its founding meeting in South Africa with more than 80 participants in 23 countries. The organization’s members have achieved and succeeded with the implementation of municipal and national bans or levies on polluting products, such as plastic bags and Styrofoam in locations that include India, France, Indonesia, Germany, Italy, Philippines, Australia, and many others. Headquartered in Berkeley, California, GAIA - Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives has additional office locations in Detroit, the Philippines, Chile, and Brussels.
