About General Motors

Researched & Written by Adrianne Bibby on the FlexJobs Team

General Motors (GM) is one of the United States' most renowned automobile manufacturers. With more than 200,000 GM employees in nearly 160 locations on six continents, the company has continued its commitment to design and engineering innovation, working with technologies including electric motors, direct injection, diesel, and aerodynamic design. As an employer, General Motors has supported a flexible work-life balance for its team by hiring for hybrid and 100% remote jobs, including opportunities to work from anywhere in the U.S. These postings have included employment opportunities in fields like accounting & finance, internet & ecommerce, marketing, computer & IT, business development, and more, and GM has stated that it will allow salaried employees to permanently work from home or in a hybrid arrangement. Furthermore, the company plans to conduct more training remotely for 87,000 hourly factory workers whose jobs require them to be on-site at its manufacturing facilities. These flexible work arrangements are what General Motors describes as an effort to "work appropriately."

In 1908, General Motors was founded by William "Billy" Durant, who initially built horse-drawn vehicles in Flint, Michigan. Starting with only the Buick Motor Company, General Motors would come to acquire a number of other carmakers, including Oldsmobile and Cadillac. By the end of the 20th century, GM had grown into a global powerhouse, but the economic crisis brought with it a period of financial turbulence for General Motors. In 2009, the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy to reduce its debts. Since its emergence from bankruptcy reorganization, with financial assistance from the federal government, General Motors has moved to offer a diversified portfolio of vehicles, including electric and mini cars, convertibles, and full-size, heavy-duty trucks sold around the globe.

Success stories from FlexJobs members who were hired at General Motors

I prefer working from home. I'm more productive and don't have to worry about dealing with traffic, packing a lunch, or getting sick. I heard about FlexJobs from a friend. At first, I was skeptical, but when FlexJobs offered a promotion, I joined. I created my profile and applied to several places using a 100% remote search filter. This company called me four days later. Now, I believe in FlexJobs more than any other job search site. Keep learning, be patient, and your opportunity will come.
