Based in Golden, Colorado, iDE is a nonprofit organization that works to create opportunities for income and livelihood for poor and rural people overseas. Working in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, iDE was founded in 1982 by Paul Polak, who was visiting a refugee camp in Somalia and, seeking to help local refugees who were lacking transportation, came up with more efficient donkey cart system. Eventually, more than 500 of the re-engineered carts were sold and local cart owners made $1 million in net income. Now, iDE looks for ways to provide income in the areas it helps, including use of water irrigation, purification and storage systems; rural marketing, food security, and technology. Among its accolades, iDE is the winner of the 2012 Lipman Family Prize from the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School, for "innovative, market-based water, sanitation, and hygiene projects." As an employer, iDE has offered part time job opportunities in the past.
