One Acre Fund is a nonprofit social enterprise that provides smallholder, subsistence farmers in East Africa with financing and training support. Founded in 2006 and headquartered in Kakamega, Western Province, Kenya, One Acre Fund believes in putting farmers first, measuring its success by its ability to help farmers prosper. Working to help smallholder farmers thrive, One Acre Fund supplies agricultural training, market access, fertilizers and seed, weather-related risk insurance to protect against potential harvest loss, and other tools. Rather than "handouts," the organization aims to generate among farmers "a permanent gain in farm income," and it serves approximately 800,000 rural farmers. One Acre Fund has been recognized with numerous awards from major media outlets, organizations, and publications, such as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, USAID, and Forbes magazine. Furthermore, in 2015, it won The World Food Prize, otherwise known as the Norman Borlaug Award.
