About Sacred Spaces

Researched & Written by Emily March on the FlexJobs Team

Sacred Spaces is a nonprofit organization on a mission to create healthy Jewish communities by uniting with Jewish institutions across North America to respond to and prevent sexual abuse, among other exploitations of power. The organization was founded in 2016 by CEO Shira Berkovits, Esq., PhD. A behavioral psychologist and attorney of criminal law, Shira spent years studying the connections between psychology, law, and sexual offending in faith communities. She contributes a uniquely Jewish lens and was named to The Jewish Week’s “36 Under 36” list in 2017.

Based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Sacred Spaces works to implement an independent system nationwide that builds accountable institutions, the culture and operations of which prevent opportunities for harassment and assault. This system emphasizes a voluntary accreditation model, in which Jewish institutions elect to become accredited before undergoing a process of readiness checks, assessment, policy development, training, education, and implementation and maintenance of programs. Additional professional services include case consults. As of 2019, Sacred Spaces is expanding its program to address sexual harassment in Jewish professional spaces and elder abuse.

As a fast-growing employer, Sacred Spaces is committed to creating its own sacred spaces within its internal operations. This means leadership fosters a culture of transparency, accountability, gratitude, and improvement. Not only does the organization work to provide direct and regular feedback loops and clear goal-setting, but the team receives ample opportunities for professional development and impactful involvement in decision-making. In the past, flexible opportunities, including remote jobs, have been posted in business development, communications, nonprofit & philanthropy, operations, marketing, and other fields for experienced applicants seeking work-life balance.
