Located on Vashon Island, just southwest of Seattle, Vashon Allied Arts is a non-profit community art center that seeks to bring art, theater, music, and dance to the island. Vashon Allied Arts was founded in 1966 and is one of the oldest community art centers in Washington. Guided by the principle that there is an artist in everyone, Vashon Allied Arts seeks to provide the public with opportunities to create art themselves, as well as events where artists can showcase or perform their work. The community center offers more than 120 art classes every year for children and adults, including children's summer camps, dance, pottery, puppet-making, theater, and weaving, among others. Scholarships are available to help make classes accessible to all members of the community. The Vashon Allied Arts Gallery changes its exhibits on a monthly basis, displaying work in a wide range of media from Vashon Island artists as well as artists from throughout the Northwest. Profits from the Heron's Nest, a nonprofit organization selling local arts and crafts, support programs at the community center and Vashon Island artists. Vashon Allied Arts also works with local schools to improve arts education in the Vashon Island School District. Vashon Allied Arts has offered flexible work in the past, including part-time jobs.
