Remote Tutor Job Supplements Woman’s Freelance Consulting Career

A remote job can come with rewards, and with challenges too. A common complaint for remote workers is that, even with all the benefits, telecommuting can be an isolating experience. This week, our FlexJobs success story is about a woman who found a way to avoid that sense of isolation by engaging with students as a remote tutor.

Kristin K. from Los Angeles, California, had just embarked on a new career path as a freelance marketing consultant, but she was feeling just a little bit disconnected from the working world. Looking for ways to fill in the gaps in her schedule, Kristin discovered FlexJobs, became a member, and found a part-time, remote job as an academic tutor at PrepScholar. An e-learning education technology platform, PrepScholar offers tailored programs designed to help students grow and improve.

Using Remote Work to Diversify Skills

Responding to questions from FlexJobs about her job search success, Kristin said her search for work flexibility was fueled by a desire to fill up her work schedule and diversify her job skills.

“I just started out on my own as a freelance market research consultant and was looking for another flexible freelance opportunity in a different field to diversify my skills and help fill in some of the inevitable scheduling gaps,” Kristin wrote. “After hanging out my consultant shingle, I quickly learned that working alone from home can become a bit stifling and tedious.”

Connecting with Students with Remote Work

As an academic tutor, Kristin was able to end the sense of isolation that came with working from home and become a positive influence in the lives of her students.

“I’m really excited to be able to connect with the students that I’ll be tutoring via webcam, which will not only provide me with an outlet, but also give me the chance to make a difference in their scholastic careers and help them succeed.”

Tips and Inspiration for Other Job Seekers

Kristin advises other FlexJobs members to do their research. “Start with the one-month membership to get a feel for how the site works and if the jobs posted are the type of opportunities you’re looking for,” she wrote.

“When I first decided to look for a telecommuting position, I had no idea what type of jobs even existed as possibilities, so perusing FlexJobs was incredibly helpful even as base research,” Kristin said. “Then, if the site works for you (as it did for me!), it’s incredibly easy to upgrade to a longer subscription for the same package deal (you don’t lose any money by waiting).

“I was most successful when I became much more laser-focused on the type of jobs I applied to, and only submitted applications for ones that were a strong fit. It’s tempting to apply to every job posting that sounds even remotely relevant to your skill set, but your success rate will go up if you can be more specific about what you’re looking for because you can really tailor your resume and cover letter to fit.”
