Transcriptionist Success Story

Transcriptionist Sets Own Hours in Home-Based Job

Transcription is one of many professions offering great remote job opportunities. Traversing industries like healthcare, law enforcement, insurance, and entertainment, transcriptionist positions have great potential if you’re looking for a home-based job.

The focus of this week’s FlexJobs success story is Sue F., who lives in Pepin, Wisconsin. Sue responded to a series of questions FlexJobs asks of successful job seekers to share her success finding remote work as a transcriptionist with Allegis Transcription, which provides transcription services to the property and casualty insurance claims markets.

Remote Opportunities in Transcription

Sue already had career experience working as an independent contractor with a transcription job when she began exploring flexible work options online, she said. “I’ve been a medical transcriptionist working from home for several years, though I was ready for a different challenge,” she wrote.

Given her job experience, Sue was certain that she wanted to continue working as a home-based transcriber. “I didn’t want to give up the flexibility of working from home, so I started searching the Internet for remote job opportunities.”

Discovering the Best Source for Legitimate Flexible Work

In her search for flexible work, Sue told FlexJobs she came across several job search websites that were questionable. “What I quickly found was that many of the jobs found on an Internet search aren’t legitimate,” Sue said. “Not that everyone who advertises on the web is a scam artist, but it’s difficult to conduct the research necessary to see if the advertisers are genuine.”

Even before Sue signed up for FlexJobs membership, her research revealed the job search advantages that could help her find great flexible work. “Once I found the FlexJobs site and read their blog and viewed the posted jobs (which were limited in number since I hadn’t yet paid a subscription), I realized that FlexJobs would do all of the research for me if I wanted them to,” Sue wrote. “I decided to subscribe for just a month and give FlexJobs a try.”

Strategies for Using a FlexJobs Membership

With her membership activated, Sue had no problem navigating the job search features and FlexJobs benefits. “It was pretty easy,” Sue said. “I narrowed down the search criteria for the type of work I was seeking, and I created an online resume and uploaded it to the site.”

Sue added, “After that, I monitored my dashboard every day to see which new jobs matched my criteria. Once I identified a job that interested me, the FlexJobs site easily directed me to the job description and company description.” Not long after she signed up, Sue wrote that she “found two jobs that were of interest to me, and I applied to both of them.”

Inspiration for Others Seeking Home-Based Jobs

A skills test was one of the first steps employers asked Sue to take. “One of the prospective employers required me to take a quick online test to see if my skills matched their needs,” Sue said. “Then they set up a Skype interview with me. Shortly after that, I was offered the job, all within just a couple of weeks of subscribing to FlexJobs.”

Her new part-time job has opened a great path to work-life flexibility, Sue said. “I can select my own work hours, and I can work as many or as few hours per week as I wish, all from home. It fits my lifestyle perfectly, and I really enjoy it.”
