A division of Colorado's well known Centura Health System, Mercy Regional Medical Center was originally founded in 1882 by the Sisters of Mercy. Being the first hospital in the four corners region, Mercy Regional Medical Center went through multiple remodels over the next 120 years as the town of Durango grew up around it. By 2000, Mercy Regional Medical Center was in dire need of more space, but was blocked in by the town around it. In 2006, a brand new facility opened outside of the downtown area providing plenty of space, and room to grow. The old Mercy Regional Medical Center was demolished, and the land was donated to the town of Durango.
