About State of Georgia

Researched & Written by Jodi Sapita on the FlexJobs Team

The State of Georgia, otherwise known as the "Peach State" or the "Empire State of the South," was the fourth American territory inducted into the United States in 1788. One of the original thirteen colonies, Georgia's induction occurred less than a month after the inauguration of the first three U.S. states. Named after King George II of England, Georgia is the largest state east of the Mississippi River, encompassing a landmass of nearly 58,000 square miles and home to more than 10 million citizens. Responsible for business processes, legislation, travel, commerce, health, government, and more, the State of Georgia is the primary governing office for all state agencies, departments, and programs. In an effort to meet the needs of the citizens of Georgia, the state occasionally provides opportunities for support staff members to work remotely on assignments of varied responsibilities and roles for the development and management of its divisions. In the past, State of Georgia jobs have included full-time and part-time roles, some of which feature temporary and hybrid to 100% remote flexibility.

Headquartered in the capital city of Atlanta, Georgia, the state's additional top five cities include Augusta, Columbus, Savannah, and Athens. In recent years, Atlanta's film industry has grown tremendously, and the city is now one of the largest filmmaking hubs in the U.S. Southeast. Furthermore, the city's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport is the busiest airport in the world. Popular tourist attractions include Six Flags, the College Football Hall of Fame, and a plethora of museums, gardens, zoos, and historical centers. Fun facts: Georgia is the birthplace of Nobel Prize winners Martin Luther King, Jr. and former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, as well as famous actors and musicians Julia Roberts, Ray Charles, Otis Redding, and Kanye West.
