Woman Finds Creative Outlet and Extra Income with Part-Time Remote Marketing Job

If you’re working a traditional day job, a part-time position can be a fantastic way to supplement your income and express your creative side. That’s the case with the subject of this week’s FlexJobs success story, a millennial who found a part-time remote marketing job that’s proven to be a great creative outlet.

Shanika B. not only had experience in marketing when she became a FlexJobs member, but was already fully employed at a managerial level. As often happens when professionals climb the career ladder, the managerial duties in her day job took her away from the kind of creative work she enjoyed.

Shanika used her FlexJobs membership to search for a part-time, remote job, and she found one as a virtual marketing assistant at Equivity, a 100% virtual company that pairs clients with virtual assistants to help with paralegal, marketing, and administrative support across a wide range of industries.

Looking to Supplement Income with a Part-Time Job

Shanika had some pretty specific job search goals in mind when she began looking for flexible work. “I needed a part-time job to supplement my income, as well as a job that would allow me to utilize my creative and marketing skills I have acquired over the years but haven’t been able to use since I have been in a senior management role in my day job.”

A resident of Lorton, Virginia, Shanika responded to questions from FlexJobs about her job search success, and how she capitalized on her marketing background to find a job that suited her skills and her personal life.

Better Work-Life Blend with Work Flexibility

While she’s continuing to work in a traditional day job, Shanika said her work-from-home marketing job has brought several benefits with it. “Having a flexible job allows me to be home when my kids get home, getting rid of the need for daycare,” she wrote. “Plus, I can work in an environment I am most comfortable with.”

The extra income has been a confidence builder, Shanika said. “Having a flexible job increases my well-being because of the boost to my income without having to leave my house,” Shanika noted. Moreover, she said, “I prefer working from home. I am more productive.”

Job Search Strategies That Worked

Shanika shared a few inspiring tips and strategies that helped her find success as a FlexJobs member. “Be proactive,” she advised. “I searched for the companies instead of waiting for them to search [for] me.”

“In addition,” Shanika wrote, “always broaden your search.” How’d she do that? “First, remember not all positions are called the same thing,” Shanika said. “I got a job listed as a virtual marketing assistant but it is a marketing manager job. If I [hadn’t] broadened my search I would’ve never found this job.”

Paying for a FlexJobs membership was a more than worthwhile expense. “It is worth the investment,” Shanika said. “If I can find a job with the same benefits as my day job, I would leave my day job in a second.”
