Girls on the Run of Northwest Illinois, a local council of the international GOTR network, began serving girls in 2007 in McHenry County, Illinois. Launched as GOTR McHenry County, the organization grew from 17 to 300 participants in two years. As word spread, Girls on the Run of Northwest Illinois expanded into additional counties, reaching over 1,400 girls and changing its name in response to its enlarged service area. Also known as GOTRNWIL, the 501(c)(3) nonprofit brings kindness to everyone and strives to make a difference in how girls view themselves and the world at large.

Headquartered in Crystal Lake, Illinois, Girls on the Run of Northwest Illinois serves girls across the state's Boone, DeKalb, Kane, McHenry, and Winnebago Counties. Through physical activity-based, positive youth development programs for elementary and middle school girls, Girls on the Run of Northwest Illinois helps participates acknowledge their power and responsibility, embrace strength in differences, express optimism and gratitude, lead with positive intent, cultivate healthy lives, and defend themselves and others. Studies show its impact greatly increases self-confidence, physical activity, and critical-thinking skills among girls.
