About Big Brothers Big Sisters of America

Researched & Written by Alexis Reale on the FlexJobs Team

Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of America is a nonprofit on a mission to develop and support one-on-one mentoring relationships aimed to “ignite the power and promise of youth.” Specifically, the organization partners with community members who mentor children in the BBBS program to foster higher aspirations, greater confidence, better relationships, avoidance of risky behaviors, and educational success. Big Brothers Big Sisters is an inclusive employer committed to recognizing, affirming, and celebrating the diverse backgrounds, abilities, experiences, and lives of all stakeholders. Aside from its commitment to justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI), BBBS works to support team members with an employee perks program and other benefits. The flexible employer has additionally offered part-time and remote job opportunities in fields like human services, nonprofit & philanthropy, and youth & children.

Big Brothers Big Sisters was established in 1904 when Ernest Coulter, a New York City court clerk, noticed a growing number of boys coming through his courtroom and realized caring adults could help kids stay out of trouble, marking the beginning of the Big Brothers Association. Simultaneously, Ladies of Charity, a group eventually known as Catholic Big Sisters, was befriending girls who had come through the New York Children’s Court. In 1977, the two groups joined forces, and today, Big Brothers Big Sisters operates in 50 U.S. states and 12 countries worldwide. Self-described as America’s largest volunteer- and donor-supported mentoring network, BBBS makes meaningful and monitored connections between adult volunteers, or Bigs, and children, or Littles, ages five to young adulthood. It supports these mentorships with programs focused on the community, schools, children of military families, and children with incarcerated parents.
