Woman Rebounds from Corporate Downsizing with a Remote, Seasonal Job

Our FlexJobs success story this week is another example of a job seeker whose career hit a speed bump, but then recovered—thanks to work flexibility. In her case, a remote, seasonal job helped her transition from a traditional career to one that offers greater flexibility.

Rena B. was going through a tough year, both personally and professionally, when she launched her search for flexible work. Battling back after a layoff, Rena began looking for a work-from-home position and discovered FlexJobs during her search. Rena’s decision to become a FlexJobs member paid off with a seasonal, full-time job at a tax services and personal finance company. Rena’s new job in customer relations offers her the flexibility to work from home. How’d she do it?

Baby Boomer Bounces Back

A resident of Houston, Texas, Rena shared details with FlexJobs about a challenging time in her life. “Due to a corporate downsizing I was laid off in 2015—a year my father also passed, so a very sad year,” she wrote.

On top of those major life developments, Rena felt that she’d reached a new stage in her career. “I realized I was no longer appealing in the competitive marketplace—late 50s—and that I no longer wanted to fly or drive extensively for work,” she wrote, responding to questions from FlexJobs about her job search success. “I was gravitating towards a work-from-home ‘gig’ environment, and after a couple of employment detours, found FlexJobs in 2018 and have never looked back.”

Capitalizing on Skills, Ditching the Commute

Rena, who self-identified as a baby boomer, told FlexJobs that finding her work-from-home job has been a game-changer. “It is confirmation that the gig economy is viable for anyone at any age, providing they have the skill set the employer needs,” Rena wrote. “So, no more traffic, no more cash outlay for attire and expenses, no more office politics.”

Like many people who work from home, Rena said her productivity levels have changed for the better, allowing for an “ability to concentrate fully on the job.” Another positive has been getting her foot in the door as an at-home worker. “Once you’ve proven your mettle in the gig economy, the choices are even better,” Rena wrote.

FlexJobs: An Investment in Your Flexible Career

Rena offered fantastic advice, based on her FlexJobs experience, about finding a flexible career using our services. “My intuition was proven correct. I knew I could get a [work-from-home] gig if my skill set, interview, etc., dovetailed with the prospective employer’s needs,” she wrote. Working flexibly “also benefits the employer—no real estate overhead, and the ability to cull nationally or even internationally for the right candidate.”

Another recommendation from Rena was “a tighter, shorter resume, [and] thoughtful and brief cover letters.” She added: “Read the job description—is this really something you want to do?” She was pleased with the FlexJobs member services. When it came down to a making a decision about investing in a FlexJobs membership, Rena was good to go. “FlexJobs is an investment, not an expense,” she said. “As soon as this gig ends, I will return to FlexJobs.”

All told, Rena said her FlexJobs experience was a great investment. “Thank you for doing most of the work, verifying legitimacy of companies, for having excellent data matches, a responsive and polite workforce, and a reasonable fee for all that work.”
