About League of Women Voters - LWV
Researched & Written by Jessica Howington on the FlexJobs Team
Founded by Carrie Chapman Catt, the League of Women Voters (LWV) was established in 1920 during the convention of the National Woman Suffrage Association. Beginning as a political experiment, LWV was formed to assist 20 million women with their new responsibilities as voters. With Leagues in every U.S. state and territory, and in more than 700 communities, LWV operates at local, state, and national levels to still assist the public in carrying out its responsibility as voters.
The grassroots, nonpartisan organization works primarily to protect the rights of voters and eliminate voter suppression. Top priorities include expanding voter access, redistricting, eliminating SuperPACs, and more. LWV reached 10 million voters in 2018 and achieved hundreds of voting rights victories with its membership now up to over 400,000 supporters. The League of Women Voters also conducts research and takes position and action on issues such as health care reform, immigration, and the environment, a main goal being not only policy reform, but the education of voters so they may actively and efficiently practice their rights and create change. Most recently, the League released a statement of its support of the For the People Act in the Senate.
Led by President Chris Carson and based in Washington, DC, the League seeks hard-working professionals to join its dynamic team who are passionate about "empowering voters" and "defending democracy." While LWV hires only for the national office, state and local chapters manage their own hiring to augment community volunteers. Past flexible jobs posted include work-life balance features such as freelance contract roles and temporary, short-term schedules
