The League of Women Voters of San Francisco (LWVSF) is a part of the League of Women Voters (LWV), a grassroots, nonpartisan organization dedicated to informing the public about governmental policy, advocating for policy change, and motivating communities to get involved. With Leagues across the United States, LWV has been operating on local, state, and national levels since 1920.

Earning their right to vote in 1911, women in San Francisco started the San Francisco Center which advocated voter education and women’s suffrage. This center joined the League of Women Voters in 1920. Made up of men and women seeking change in their community, LWVSF is led by President Leah Edwards. These men and women have formed committees within LWVSF that carry out most of its work. Members can choose to be a part of committees focusing on voter services, communications, education, budget, advocacy, and more. The LWVSF process begins with choosing programs and conducting research and ends with taking action. One of the organizations’ primary concerns is schools and communities. One of its recent initiatives is the California Schools and Local Communities Funding Act of 2018, which restores $11 million to schools, colleges, and other community services.
