The League of Women Voters (LWV) is a nonpartisan political organization that motivates active involvement in government by informing the public of significant policy issues and influencing public policy through advocacy initiatives and education. The League of Women Voters of New York State (LWVNYS) was formed in 1919. With 60 local leagues throughout the state, the overall LWVNYS organization operates from headquarters in Albany, New York. Led by Executive Director Laura Ladd Bierman, LWVNYS shares the mission of LWV by focusing on the judicial system, legislative lobby reform, campaign finance reform, health care, public education, and more. It has actively sought change in public policy on issues such as juvenile justice, energy and climate change, clean water, property tax reform, livable wage, and a plethora of women's issues such as fair pay and domestic violence. The League works toward this reform through various advocacy initiatives like producing publications, as well as education programs, such as the LWVNYS Education Foundation. The League also works to create programs for youth in education. For instance, it partnered with the NYS Social Studies Supervisory Association to publish seven lesson plans for teachers that provide government information specific to New York State.
